[PRENSA] Is populism gaining in popularity?

It claims to represent the «real» people, to fight against «the» elite. It calls our current political systems corrupt. Populism is said to be growing in success around the world, with leaders on both the left and the right – such as Donald Trump, Nicolas Maduro and Rodrigo Duterte – all called populists. Political scientist Cristobal Rovira Kaltwasser gives us his perspective on what exactly it means, just how popular it’s becoming and the possible reasons behind it.

While economic factors are often seen to impact the popularity of populism, Rovira Kaltwasser says this is too simple and that the main reason is if a political system is seen as being unable to connect with what people are thinking.
