CHILMOD is a tax-benefit microsimulation model for Chile based on the software EUROMOD – widely used in EU – which allows public policy’s research and analysts to calculate, in a comparable way, the effects of taxes and benefits (cash transfers) on household incomes and work incentives for the population of each country. The model applies fiscal policy rules and benefits defined by the researcher to microdata regarding individuals and households and computes the effects of the rules on households’ income. Users can simulate hypothetical reforms of the tax-benefit system. For instance, they could estimate the number of beneficiaries and analyze the characteristics of potential beneficiaries of a hypothetical reform. In addition, the microsimulation model can be used to study the effects of hypothetical income tax and social security contribution reforms and compute their effects on the government budget (revenue and spending). CHILMOD can answer questions such as: Which type of prospective reforms could improve the living standards of urban, rural, and informal workers? How much would such policies cost? What kind of reforms to direct and indirect taxes would be needed to offset the additional expenditures on social protection?

Short description about Workshop: The November 9th and 10th Workshop includes Keynotes Speakers, Public Policy Discussion Panels with important international and national academic guests, as well as relevant policymakers from the public sector, to discuss social policy, inequality, redistribution, tax-benefit policies, labor markets, and another related topics.

Target audience: Researchers, interested and interested in social policy and tax-benefit policy, inequality, and income distribution.

Target Audience of the Training Course: People who work in research areas or design public policies related to taxes, social policies, labor market, and microeconomic simulations. Training in the CHILMOD software will provide added value to the analysis and recommendations of institutions related to these issues.
