This chapter traces Chile’s differentiated postsecondary system from the reform of the early 1980s to its configuration today. Midway in this 35-year period there was a turning point in the development of the non-university sector, resulting from the availability of financial aid to its students. The first section of this chapter describes the early evolution of the current system to the end of the last century.
