RESUMEN

This research project is concerned with the challenges that indigenous experiences of state violence pose for transitional justice (TJ). We draw attention to the misrepresentation of Mapuche victims during Pinochet’s dictatorship (1973-1990) in the three official Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TCs) that were implemented from the 1990s onwards in Chile. As we will show, while on the one hand the state focused on practices of truth telling and memory in the 1990s and 2000s, on the other hand, it perpetuated the silencing of Mapuche accounts of violence during that period. The project also traces various non official initiatives of transitional justice from a bottom up perspective, and analyze the narratives and representations of memory and justice of Mapuche victims of state violence.
