From July 4 to 7, 8 COES researchers from the Group and Individual Interactions line of research gave presentations at the 41st Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Society of Political Psychology. The theme of this year’s conference was “Beyond Borders and Boundaries: Perspectives from Political Psychology” and was held in San Antonio, Texas, United States. “The conference topic also resonates, ironically, with Texas where a border wall with Mexico is being planned and where recent legislation has restricted LGBT people”, said Eva G.T. Green, President of ISPP, in her welcome speech.
COES researchers Roberto González and Hector Carvacho organized two symposiums in which eight papers were presented, representing the research of 13 of the Center’s academics.
In the symposium Antecedents of Social Cohesion: Segregation, Inequality, Contact, and Perceived Justice, organized by Roberto González, 4 COES papers were presented, authored by a total of 10 researchers, including 1 doctoral student and 2 research assistants. The symposium also benefited from the participation of Linda Tropp, who is part of the international COES network.
The second symposium, entitled Antecedents and Consequences of Political Participation in Collective Actions in Chile, was organized by Hector Carvacho. This event was based on the results of Fondecyt study Nº1161371, “Psychological consequences of participation in social movements”, led by Roberto González and coauthored by Carvacho. Of the 4 presentations, 3 were by COES academics, whose teams consisted of 8 researchers from the Center, including 1 doctoral student and 4 research assistants.
Ana Figueiredo also participated in the Meeting and presented the paper “The Mapuche in Chile: interconnections between territorial claims and present-day social conflict”
